CCI in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close

CCI compares the typical price with its moving average, scaled by mean deviation. Its unbounded scale makes intrabar spikes look dramatic.

Short answer

CCI = (typical price − SMA of typical price) ÷ (0.015 × mean deviation), where typical price = (high + low + close) ÷ 3. The current bar's high, low and live close all enter the typical price, so CCI moves as the bar develops, and because it is unbounded, a fast intrabar move can push CCI from +80 to +250 before it settles. Readings beyond ±100 or ±200 seen mid-bar often shrink by the close. Use closed-bar CCI for thresholds.

Which part of CCI uses the live bar

ComponentUses current bar?Effect intrabar
Typical price (H+L+C)/3YesMoves with H, L and live C
SMA of typical priceYes (one of N)Small change
Mean deviationYesChanges slightly

The 0.015 constant scales CCI so that roughly 70–80% of values fall between −100 and +100 in typical conditions. Intrabar spikes push outside that band temporarily.
