BTC Beta in Altcoin Positions: When the Common Rule Produces a Misleading Result

'Hedge an altcoin with BTC using its beta' works when beta is stable. Beta estimated in calm markets often understates how much the alt falls in a crash.

Short answer

A beta hedge sizes a BTC short as beta × altcoin position. If beta was estimated at 1.3 in calm markets but behaves like 1.8 in a sell-off, a $20,000 alt position hedged with $26,000 of BTC short loses about $3,600 on the alt when BTC falls 10% (−18%) while the hedge gains $2,600 — a $1,000 shortfall plus fees and funding. Estimate beta across regimes, look at downside beta separately, and size hedges with a margin.

Arithmetic uses standard sizing formulas. Fee rates (0.05% taker, 0.02% maker), slippage and funding values are illustrative; check your venue's schedule. Liquidation figures are simplified approximations; exchanges calculate them with their own maintenance-margin rules (see Bybit's documentation).
