Bollinger Band Mean Reversion Backtest: Bar-Close Signals vs Next-Bar Execution

Bollinger reversion rules buy closes below the lower band. The bands move with the bar, so intrabar 'touches' and closed-bar signals are different sets.

Short answer

A Bollinger mean-reversion rule buys when a bar closes below the lower band and exits near the middle band. Intrabar, the band widens as price falls, so many touches never become closed-bar signals; filling at intrabar touches captures prices that didn't produce a confirmed signal. Use closed-bar signals, next-bar open fills with reversion-appropriate slippage, and compute break-even cost.

Where the difference comes from

Because bands expand during the move, intrabar touches are much more frequent than closed-bar signals and are biased toward better prices — a large share of the apparent edge comes from those.

Questions readers ask

Bands widen; many touches never close below.

Realistic fill?

Next bar open plus slippage.
