AI Crypto Backtest Research: How to Check Timestamps Before Trusting the Answer
A backtest summary from an AI is only checkable if it states the test period, data source and when the test ran. Otherwise it can't be reproduced.
Short answer
Before trusting an AI backtest answer, require the test period start and end, the bar timeframe and data source, the run time, and confirmation that signals used closed bars with next-bar fills and costs. Check that the period includes different regimes and that no future data was used (for example, indicators shifted forward). Reject results without a reproducible period and run time.
Timestamps the answer must carry
| Value | Timestamp to require | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Test period | Start / end | Regime coverage |
| Data source | Venue, timeframe | Reproducibility |
| Run time | Timestamp | Version of rules |
| Fill timing | Signal bar vs fill bar | Look-ahead check |
Checks before trusting it
Worked example
Illustrative: an AI backtest showed +48% but covered only a six-month uptrend. Extending the period to include a drawdown cut the result to +6%.
